King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC)

KAPSARC (King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center) has opened its expansive campus of 70,000 square meters to the public in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh. The project-which was first launched in 2014-was designed by Zaha Hadid as a modular structure that grows and multiplies like a living organic cell. The result is a series of apparently crystalline structures emerging from the landscape of the desert. The buildings consist of an energy knowledge center, an energy computer center, a 300-seat conference center, a research library and the musalla, a place of prayer, are connected by hexagonal prismatic honeycomb shapes.

The design of the project as a compressed lattice cell configuration reflects the future-oriented philosophy of the institute. The modularity of the structure, created by Zaha Hadid architects, ensures consistent organizational, spatial and structural strategies as the site expands with more buildings. Its white, crystalline shape also helps to soften the Riyadh plateau's strong sunlight and heat.

KAPSARC is an independent research institution for non-profit research into policies that contribute to the most efficient use of global energy. It develops policies and economic frameworks aimed at reducing the impact of energy supply on the environment and overall costs and enabling more efficient use of practical technology-based solutions. The institution brings together leading experts from around the world to tackle energy challenges by collaborating with international research centres, public policy organizations, worldwide government institutions and the global industry; freely sharing its knowledge, insights and analytical frameworks.
